Stop, restart and remove a server

Last verified on

Open a server from the Servers screen. Stop, Start server and Restart are at the top of its page; Force off and Remove server are under the three dots next to them. Stop and Restart are also in the menu of each server on the Servers screen. Every action asks you to confirm it first.

Action What it does Billing
Stop Shuts the server down. It keeps its plan, its disk and its address Continues: the server still exists
Start Starts a stopped server Continues
Restart Stops and starts the server Continues
Force off Under the three dots of the server: switches it off at once, without shutting down. Data that was not saved to disk is lost. Only for a server that does not stop when asked Continues: the server still exists
Remove Under the three dots of the server: deletes the server and its disk. You type the name of the server to confirm Ends

Why a stopped server still costs money

A stopped server still holds its place: the disk, the reserved memory and the address stay yours. That is why only removing a server ends the billing. If you will not need a server for a while and its data can go, remove it and build a new one later.

Removing is final

A removed server cannot be brought back. Copy what you need first.

A new server is protected against removing and rebuilding, so nobody removes it by mistake. When you choose Remove server on a protected server, the dialog says so and offers Switch protection off; then type the name of the server and choose Remove for good. You can also switch the protection off under All server settings.

Volumes attached to the server go with it, data and all. The dialog names them before you confirm.

The backups of a server are removed together with the server.
