Stavane

Start your first server

Stavane Compute is a cloud server (VPS) that you pay for by the hour from prepaid credit. This page walks through the whole path once.

1. Configure

Choose Configure next to any plan on the website, or choose Create server on the Servers screen of the console. You can configure before you have an account.

  1. Choose your software. Pick an operating system, then its version inside the card.
  2. Choose your server. Pick a family, then a plan in the table. The table shows the price per month and per hour.
  3. Location. Pick the data centre closest to your users.
  4. Access & configuration. Give the server a hostname in lower case letters, digits and dashes, and choose its time zone. E-mail me the root password is ticked by default. The server is then built with a root password and SSH login with a password, and once it runs you get an e-mail with a link that shows the password once. With it ticked an SSH key is optional; untick it to sign in with SSH keys only, and pick at least one key once you are signed in. See SSH keys and signing in.
  5. More at once. Under Advanced deployment options you can start up to five identical servers in one go. They are called after the name with a number, like web-1 to web-3, and each is billed on its own. There you can also give the server your own cloud-init.

Where backups can be made in the location, they are an add-on in a last step, Add-ons, and cost a share of the plan price. You make and put back the copies yourself from the console. See Backups.

The summary on the right always shows what this server costs at most per month and per hour. Every amount on the page comes from that one summary.

2. Sign in or create an account

Choose Continue to your account. Choose Sign in if you have an account; if you are new, choose Create an account. Your configuration is kept while you sign up and confirm your e-mail address, also when you open the confirmation link on another device.

3. Top up

A server starts when your credit covers its first 24 hours. The step Your account shows your credit and what is needed for the first 24 hours; when that is more than you have, top up right there. You pay by card, confirmed with your bank through 3-D Secure, or by iDEAL in euros. After the payment you are back at the same configuration.

4. Start

Choose Continue to review, check everything once more and choose Start server. The server appears on the Servers screen while it is being built. Billing starts when it runs, not before.

With E-mail me the root password ticked, the e-mail with the link arrives once the server runs. The link opens on the console, after you sign in with the account that owns the server, and shows the password once. It works for 24 hours. The password itself is never in the e-mail.

What happens next

  • The credit is used by the hour for as long as the server exists. See How billing works.
  • Questions along the way: open a ticket from Support in the console.
