Server settings: console, protection and boot media

Every server has its own settings. Open Servers in the console, open the server and choose All server settings. The settings can be changed while the server runs or is stopped; while it is being built, moved or removed they wait.

Access and security

  • Enable VNC console. With it off, nobody can open the screen of this server from the console, you included. Switch it off for a server you only reach over SSH.
  • Protect against deletion and reinstallation. On for every new server. While it is on, nobody can remove or rebuild the server from the console or the API. Switch it off first when you do want to remove or rebuild it; that also works while the server is paused.

Boot and recovery media

  • Boot device. Hard Drive starts the system on the disk, as usual. CD/DVD-ROM starts from the ISO that is in.
  • ISO media. Choose one of the ISOs we offer, or give the address of your own.
  • Custom ISO URL. The public https:// address of an .iso file. We fetch it once when it goes in and remove it again when you take it out or remove the server.
  • TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot, for systems that ask for them.

TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, the boot device and the ISO count from the next start of the server: a stop and a start, not a restart. A restart keeps the running machine as it was. Changing the boot device can start or stop the server at that moment, so check its state after you save.

Start from an ISO to repair a server

  1. Put the ISO in under ISO media and choose CD/DVD-ROM as the boot device. Save.
  2. Stop the server and start it again, and open its console. It starts from the ISO.
  3. Repair what you need. The disk of the server is there, untouched.
  4. Take the ISO out, choose Hard Drive again and save. A system that runs from the ISO cannot shut down cleanly once the ISO is out: switch the server off with Force off under the three dots, then start it. It starts from its disk again.

Billing

These settings cost nothing. The server keeps counting by the hour as it did.
