Change the plan of a server
Changing the plan gives a server more processors, memory or disk without building a new one. The addresses stay, the name stays and everything on the disk stays.
Change the plan
- Open Servers in the console and open the server.
- Open the Settings tab and choose Change plan.
- Pick the plan it moves to and confirm.
A running server stops for a moment for this and starts again by itself with the new plan, usually within a minute. A stopped server is moved and stays stopped until you start it. Because the server starts again, whoever was logged in, over SSH or in the console, is logged out: log in again once it runs.
Which plans you can choose
| You can | You cannot |
|---|---|
| Move within the family of the server | Move to another family: start a new server for that |
| Move to a plan with at least as much disk | Make the disk smaller |
| Move to a plan your level allows | Choose a plan that opens at a higher level before you top up |
The list in the console shows the plans of this family with at least as much disk, with what each costs per month. A plan your level does not allow yet is refused when you confirm.
If the disk grows, check after the start with df -h that the file system uses the new size. If it does not, grow the partition and the file system yourself, for example with growpart and resize2fs.
If the move does not go through
Sometimes the location of the server has no free address for the new plan at that moment. The server then stays on its old plan, with everything on it, and you see why on the server page and in an e-mail, for example that no IPv6 address is free for this plan right now. You pay nothing extra. Try again later, or ask us through Support and we look at it with you.
Billing
The server counts by the hour at its old plan until the move is done, and at the new plan from the next full hour. For the rest of the month the new plan costs at most its monthly price for the part of the month that is left, see How billing works. A bigger plan needs enough credit for it, just as a new server does. There is no charge for the move itself.
