Make and put back a backup
With backups on, we make a backup of the server every day. You can also make a copy yourself at any moment, for instance right before an upgrade you are not sure about, or set a schedule of your own under Storage & backups, Backup policies.
This page is about servers that have backups on. See Backups for what the option costs and how to switch it on.
Make one yourself
- Open the server in the console and go to the Storage & backups tab.
- Give it a name you will recognise later, for instance
before the upgrade. Leave it empty and we name it after today. - Choose Make a backup.
It is not ready when the button comes back: it is ready when it appears in the list above the form. Refresh the screen after a while for a copy of a large disk.
Put one back
Putting a backup back wipes everything that happened since it was made. Files, databases, updates: all of it goes back to the moment of that copy.
- Open the Storage & backups tab of the server.
- Choose Restore next to the copy you want.
- Type the name of the server to confirm, and choose Restore. We ask for the name because this cannot be undone.
The server comes back as it was at that moment. Its address and plan do not change.
Remove one
Remove throws a copy away for good, after you confirm it. Removing a copy does not change what backups cost: the price is a share of the plan, whatever the number of copies.
What a backup is not
A backup lives with the server, at the same place. It brings back a machine you broke; it does not protect you against losing the account, and it is not an archive. Anything you cannot lose belongs somewhere else as well.
