Capacity first
Choose the size you need today. A volume can grow later; it cannot shrink, because shrinking a disk puts data at risk.
Attach and use
A new volume is a raw disk. Format and mount it in your operating system, and unmount it before you detach it.
Belongs to its server
A volume stays with the server you added it to. You can detach it and attach it again; it is removed together with the server. It is one disk, not a second copy: keep a copy of important data somewhere else as well.
